At more than 250 locations around the globe, U.S. Foreign Service personnel serve as the diplomatic arm of the United States. They are charged with protecting America’s national interests and promoting peace, stability, democracy and human rights throughout the world. In today’s terrorist environment, the lives of these brave men and women are often placed in great jeopardy, yet they continue to serve for a nation in which they so strongly believe.
The first diplomat to die in service to our Nation was William Palfrey in 1780. The two most recent Foreign Service personnel to lose their lives were Stephen Sullivan and David Foy, who died at the hands of suicide bombers. Stephen Sullivan was serving in Iraq as a Diplomatic Security special agent, while David Foy was serving as a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan. Today we pay tribute and celebrate the lives of David Foy, Stephan Sullivan and the hundreds of the other Foreign Service personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
