Each year, the White House Commission on Remembrance accepts a number of interns from throughout the country to help with the day-to-day tasks that the Commission faces. Interns perform a wide variety of tasks and are critical to the operations of the Commission. Tasks range from administrative work in the office to special projects outside of the office such as meetings with Congressmen and Senators, organizing and holding remembrance tributes, and implementing innovative ideas to market the Commission and its message of "Live honoring America's fallen."
Events and programs that interns have worked with in the past include:
- Helping to organize the Time of Remembrance tribute, including lining up speakers, helping families with travel preparations, and securing the location and equipment needed for the event
- Annual remembrance tributes such as the USS Stark, Iran Hostage Rescue Mission, and Oklahoma City Bombing tributes
- Preparations for the year's Annual Meeting with the members of the Commission, including the creation of each year's Annual Report
- Drafting proposals and creating press-kits to send out to members of the business and goverment sectors to raise awareness about the Commission's initatives and goals
- Contacting the offices of Congressman and Senators to set up meetings in order to discuss a variety of topics such as the Commission's Gold Medal of Remembrance program
- Meeting with Congressman, Senators, and their staff to garner support on the hill for the Commission's special projects
Those who intern with the White House Commission on Remembrance gain a wealth of knowledge about how Washington D.C. works, and at the same time can know that their hard work in remembering and honoring our fallen soldiers does not go unnoticed.
