Military installations in and around Pearl Harbor, Hawaii were attacked by Japanese planes killing 2,333 American Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines and wounding 1,109 others. The battleship USS Arizona was sunk at its moorings and would become the resting place of many of its crew and a National Memorial. With this attack, America entered World War II and by the time the war was over more than 400,000 men and women in the American Armed Forces had died.

Old Glory will be raised at the USS Arizona Memorial to begin the Journey of Remembrance across America to fly at the U.S. Capitol on Memorial Day, May 26, 2008. The Journey begins at Pearl Harbor to honor those who died on December 7, 1941 including those trapped and resting still at their duty stations in the battleship, and the flag will travel to 25 historic sites throughout the nation. The Journey of Remembrance will honor all those who have died in service to our country culminating in the National Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day, 2008.
