America Unites In Remembrance

The White House Commission on Remembrance, established by Congress in 2000, is an independent, non-partisan government agency that encourages Americans to honor the sacrifices of our fallen and their families. It promotes acts of remembrance throughout the year and asks citizens to pay our debt of gratitude in memory of those who died in service to our country by giving something back to the Nation.

The Commission is also tasked with sponsoring the National Moment of Remembrance, Public Law 106-579, which invites everyone to pause where they are at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day in an uplifting act of national unity. In this shared remembrance, we have the chance to successfully connect as Americans.

On September 26, 2009, The White House Commission on Remembrance hosted its Fourth Annual Time of Remembrance Ceremony on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol Building. Kevin Bacon, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, Ross Perot, Jeanne Phillips (Dear Abby), and other military officers, elected officials, and special guests, joined about 2,000 Gold Star family members to make this year’s event particularly memorable.

The White House Commission on Remembrance is hard at work preparing a DVD of the ceremony for all of the Gold Star Families who attended. If you were unable to attend the ceremony, or would like to request a copy of the DVD, please email us at Commission@remember.gov.

Photos of the ceremony are available, courtesy of JPG Photo Events, at http://web.me.com/jgoodridge1/Remember-2009/Photos.html and can be downloaded for personal use.

The White House Commission on Remembrance is already working on next year’s ceremony and will be releasing the date as soon as details are confirmed.
